The soldier defected through Panmunjom village, along the Joint Security Area (JSA), which is policed by soldiers from both North Korea and South Korea.

Soldiers from the North have occasionally defected to South Korea across the border but it is rare for a North Korean soldier to defect via the Joint Security Area, where border guards of the rival Koreas stand facing each other just metres apart, and be shot by fellow North Korean soldiers.

The Joint Security Area in Panmunjom is the only place in 155-mile-long and 2 ½ mile-wide Korean Demilitarized Zone where military-level meetings are held between the UN Command and North Korea. This year, North Korean defectors successfully escaping the regime fell by 12.7 percent, according to the Telegraph.

Among issues the North Koreans have raised with her in recent months, DiMaggio said, were everything from Trump's tweet urging Tillerson to give up on diplomacy with North Korea ("Is this a good cop/bad cop that he's doing with Tillerson?") to Trump's decision this fall to decertify Iran's compliance with the nuclear deal forged by his predecessor, Barack Obama.

These were the first gunshots fired at the truce village of Panmunjom in 33 years and the first defection of a North Korean soldier since 2007.

The Joint Chiefs of Staff official said he was found collapsed in a pile of fallen leaves and recovered by three South Korean soldiers crawling on their stomachs to his position.

More Sunshine, Warmer Monday
But despite the warm temperatures, the record in Denver is 75 degrees - set back in 1999, so we won't come close to that. Highs on Saturday climb into the mid to upper 50s, but behind the front on Sunday we'll only reach the mid 40s.

DiMaggio has held secret backchannel talks with North Korean officials four times over the past year, The Daily Telegraph reports, and has been a negotiator between the United States and North Korea for more than 20 years.

Panmunjomis where an armistice was signed to pause the Korean War. More than a million mines are believed to be buried inside the zone.

All channels for dialogue are now cut off between Seoul and Pyongyang after North Korea's relentless development of nuclear weapons and missiles.

The most famous incident was in 1976, when two American army officers were killed by ax-wielding North Korean soldiers.
