AG Sessions says he 'always told the truth' in describing Russian Federation contacts

Sessions Gets Heated in Exchange With Oregon Senator

U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions will face a barrage of questions from Democrats in the House of Representatives on Tuesday over whether he lied about communications between President Donald Trump's election campaign and Russian representatives.

They see her alleged role as a scandal, particularly amid charges the Trump campaign colluded with Russian Federation in the 2016 presidential election.

But the court documents, and Papadopoulos' guilty plea for lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation over his contacts with Russian officials, put new focus on Sessions' earlier testimony. Page has said publicly that he told Sessions previous year that he was preparing to visit Russian Federation.

Democratic lawmakers already contend the attorney general has not been forthcoming with them and have signaled that questions about the new revelations are likely to dominate what could otherwise have been a routine oversight hearing.

Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee pressed Mr. Sessions to explain whether he was pressured to restart investigations targeting President Trump's former democratic rival. But if the Department doesn't launch an investigation, Sessions will be seen as having defied the president and let down the GOP at a moment when it's eager to get to the bottom of the dossier mystery and to push Democrats into the Russiagate spotlight.

Sessions testified at an open hearing in front of the House Judiciary Committee on Tuesday, and Conyers chose to base his first line of questioning on the following Trump tweets.

Asked in a House Judiciary Committee hearing whether he would review requests for a prosecutor "fairly and expeditiously", Sessions confirmed he would.

"I do now recall" the meeting where adviser George Papadopoulos made the proposal, Sessions said, "but I have no clear recollection of the details of what he said during the meeting".

ISIS leader may be in eastern Syrian city of Boukamal
A Hezbollah-run media unit had said on Friday that IS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi was reported to have been in the town during the Syrian army and its allies' operation to clear it.

Sessions said he did "not challenge" Page's recollection, but said he had "no memory" of his presence at a dinner or "any passing conversation he may have had with me as he left". In January, the attorney general testified to the Senate that he had not "been in contact with anyone connected to any part of the Russian government about the 2016 election, either before or after election day".

However, Sessions said he would not acknowledge if he will recuse himself from any probe regarding Clinton, despite earlier pledges to do just that given his high-profile role in the Trump campaign.

In terms of the CFIUS approval, Clinton has said she had nothing to do with it.

News broke Monday night that Sessions has asked senior federal prosecutors to "evaluate certain issues" presented by House Republicans, including alleged ties between the Clinton Foundation and the sale of Uranium One.

And at his latest appearance before the Senate Judiciary Committee, Sessions seemed to shift his position again.

Trump has repeatedly criticized his Justice Department for not aggressively probing a variety of conservative concerns.

Mrs. Clinton's campaign spokesman, Brian Fallon, has said suggestions they did were "baseless".
