Sean Parker says Facebook exploits a vulnerability in human psychology

Ex-Facebook president Sean Parker says social media site exploits human weakness is its bid to 'consume as much time and conscious attention as possible'

Facebook's first president had some choice words Wednesday for the social media giant he helped to found. Sean Parker, 37, criticized the potential effects of social networks and said he was concerned about their effect on human psychology.

"I don't know if I really understood the consequences of what I was saying, because of the unintended consequences of a network when it grows to a billion or 2billion people and.it literally changes your relationship with society, with each other".

"God only knows what it's doing to our children's brains", Parker said.

He then delivered an intriguing glimpse of how the company was designed with one goal in mind: "How do we consume as much of your time and conscious attention as possible?" Users post something, they get comments and likes, and they post more.

Nevertheless, he describes how he once tried to get as many people as possible to use Facebook's platform.

The inventors, creators - it's me, it's Mark [Zuckerberg], it's Kevin Systrom on Instagram, it's all of these people - understood this consciously.

Facebook is purposefully making its social network addictive, treating each like and comment as dopamine hits to keep users wanting more.

Here's the one way to legally stream Taylor Swift's 'reputation' (sort of)
In verse two, she makes it clear that " This Is Why We Can't Have Nice Things " is about burning bridges. Swift is definitely feeling herself and all the love that's come from her new creation.

Parker, who has a net worth of over $2 billion, is not the only former Facebook employee to feel as if the company may be doing more harm than good. "I value presence. I value intimacy.' And I would say...'We'll get you eventually'".

Mr Parker became Facebook's first president after making hundreds of millions of dollars from the music-sharing service Napster. Now the founder and chair of the Parker Institute for Cancer Immunotherapy, Parker was there to speak about advances in cancer therapies.

It puts users under a "social-validation feedback loop", said Parker, something that "a hacker like myself would come up with".

He also joked that Mark Zuckerberg would probably end up blocking him in the wake of his comments.

Parker's comments, though revelatory, come off as somewhat ironic, given that he has reaped billions off Facebook from being an early investor. Yet "we did it anyway".

Zuckerberg, who has asked for "forgiveness" for ways his "work was used to divide people", revealed Facebook's new mission statement this past summer. "Perhaps it's just wistful thinking on my part, but it seems to me that it's Zuckerberg who should be anxious that more and more people might start carrying out this blocking all on their own", he commented on his blog.
