Ride sharing giant Uber has signed a deal with NASA as its plans to roll out autonomous flying cars takes off.

"UberAir will be performing far more flights on a daily basis than it has ever been done before".

The ride-hailing service published details of its "on demand aviation" ambitions previous year which it has called Uber Elevate.

Flying cars may be closer than we think as Uber has announced a contract from NASA to develop software to coordinate and monitor air traffic during the 2017 Web Summit in Lisbon.

The project, dubbed Elevate, hopes to trial aerial taxis in Dallas, Dubai and Los Angeles by 2020.

It hopes to launch UberAir before the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.

"This collaboration makes a ton of sense in order to bring this to market as fast as possible", Uber chief product officer Jeff Holden said in an interview with Bloomberg Television.

Opposition Leader Bill Shorten believes the federal government should accept the offer. More than 600 refugees have barricaded themselves on Manus Island.

She joins three other passengers in a pilot-less electric plane featuring swiveling propellers that allow the craft to take off and land vertically. The aircraft would differ from helicopters in that they would be quieter, safer, more affordable and more environmentally friendly, according to the company. The company expects prices for the trips to be around the same as those completed using UberX.

A special effects video the company released on Twitter showed how the technology would work, portraying a woman hailing an uberAIR and then riding an elevator to the roof of a tall building to catch her flying ride.

Eric Garcetti, mayor of LA, said the city is the "perfect" place to test the new service. "LA is the flawless testing ground for this new technology and I look forward to seeing it grow in the coming years".

New CEO Dara Khosrowshahi has said that he wants to focus on the core business, which wouldn't seem to include managing flying cars.

Uber said it does not plan to make the drones itself, instead partnering with five manufacturers that are working on new types of vertical take-off and landing aircraft.

In its presentation, Uber showed how a 16-mile ride in an Uber auto from Los Angeles International Airport to the Staples Center downtown would usually take about an hour and 20 minutes.
