For the first time ever, more shoppers will look for gifts online than in stores this holiday season, according to a survey from the National Retail Federation.

The company says their hours this year will give team members a chance to recharge and prepare their stores for "even more holiday savings" on Black Friday.

Target is pumping the brakes on Black Friday madness. Last year, a NerdWallet study found that some stores inflated the amount of certain Black Friday discounts to make deals appear better than they actually were.

Hoping to attract some early Black Friday business, Target and Toys R Us announced Monday that their stores will be open for business on Thanksgiving. The chain stayed open through the night previously.

Target will close its stores for several hours after opening once again in the evening on Thanksgiving Day this year. The Mall of America and Burnsville Center have gone further and will not open at all on Thanksgiving for the second year in a row.

The moves put the spotlight on Walmart, which has yet to disclose its strategy for the critical Black Friday promotional period. It will also offer an early access sale on more than 100 Black Friday deals for Redcard holders on the day before Thanksgiving.
