Saudi Arabia says its forces have intercepted a missile fired toward one of its major global airports on the outskirts of the capital, Riyadh.

The air forces confirmed that no damages or injuries were reported in the attempted attack targeting the Saudi capital, and the airline traffic was not disturbed.

The missile was sacked across Saudi Arabia's southern border by Yemen's Houthi rebels, according to several Houthi-owned media outlets, including Al-Masirah and SABA.

The missile was destroyed near Riyadh's King Khaled global airport and was said to be of "limited size".

The explosion occurred at the airport of Riyadh.

The Houthi rebels have seized control of Yemen's capital Sanaa, which has forced the government into exile.

Iran is ideologically aligned with the Houthis and Saudi Arabia and other Sunni states in the region accuse it of supplying it with cash and weapons.

Yemen's Houthi rebels have claimed responsibility for firing the ballistic missile.

A Saudi military spokesman condemned the attack in a statement, saying the missile was sacked "indiscriminately" towards a populated civilian area.

The explosion occurred in one of the terminals of the worldwide airport king Khalid, 35 km from Riyadh. Saudi Arabia has led a military operation in Yemen in support of the internationally recognized government, which was driven out of the capital by the Shite Houthi rebels and is now based in the southern city of Aden. "We are entering a new phase", he said.
