The Israeli Druze who broke through the fence did so in response to a major battle that was transpiring throughout Friday morning in Khader, where earlier nine people had been killed and 23 injured when a vehicle bomb exploded.

Earlier in the day, Hader was attacked by a suicide bomber from the jihadist group Al Nusra. He said 15 people were killed and 45 wounded, including civilians, in the attack on Hadar Friday.

Syrian government forces and their pro-government allies first broke the militant group's siege of their part of the city in September and have been advancing against IS positions since then.

Hader is home to the Druze community, a minority religious sect found in Syria, Israel, the occupied Palestinian territories and Lebanon.

After the incident, dozens of Israeli Druze protested at the Syrian border against the escalating violence in Hader.

It said the death toll was likely to rise as most of the wounded sustained serious injuries and had to be pulled out of the debris with difficulty in the face of gunfire and shelling by rebel fighters.

Israeli security forces say they are "prepared and ready" to prevent the capture of a village in Syria's Quneitra province caught up in clashes between President Bashar al-Assad's troops and rebels.

Al-Nusra Front is a now-changed name for a jihadist group that was formerly Al-Qaeda's affiliate in Syria and is now known as the Fateh al-Sham Front.

Israel seized 1,200 square kilometres (460 square miles) of the Golan Heights from Syria in the Six-Day War of 1967 and later annexed it, a move never recognised by the worldwide community. Unlike other Druze populations in Israel who serve in the Israeli military, the Golan population of some 20,000 has been careful not to align itself publicly with the Jewish state, which annexed the Golan in 1981.

The Syrian army and Kurdish-led forces backed by the US are now racing to take the rest of the oil-rich eastern province. "And we also cherish our sympathy for our Druze brethren".
