Senate President Stephen Parry has reportedly informed the government he may be a dual citizen

Australian Senate President Stephen Parry has said he will resign, after confirming he is a United Kingdom dual citizen.

On Friday, the High Court of Australia ruled that Australian lawmaker, Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce and four other politicians were wrongly elected as they held dual citizenship.

'It's my greatest wish that Senator Parry remain in the Senate. But should that not be the case Wacka would make an absolutely great president of the Senate'.

With a heavy heart I inform you that I have received advice from the British Home Office that I am a British citizen by virtue of my father's birthplace, thereby being a dual citizen under the provisions of the Australian Constitution.

The Australian reports the Tasmanian Senator has asked authorities in London to check if he holds dual citizenship, and is waiting for a reply.

Because my departure is rapid and an unexpected event, I will not have the usual opportunity to address you in the Senate one last time.

Parry spent 6.5 years as the senate's deputy president and then president, take home a salary worth almost $350,000 a year in the top job.

Midfielder Loftus-Cheek has made six appearances for Crystal Palace in spite of missing some games with a thigh injury. But efforts to make him agree to play with the Super Eagles by the Nigeria Football Federation proved abortive.

Mr Parry is likely to be replaced by the next candidate on the Liberal party's list at the last election.

"All I can say is the National Party, when we had doubts, we owned up straight away and went to the High Court", he told AAP just hours before Senator Parry confirmed he was a British citizen and was resigning.

In a statement, Parry said if he was found to be a dual citizen, he would step down immediately.

He quoted former U.S. president Abraham Lincoln who said in 1864: "I claim not to have controlled events, but confess plainly that events have controlled me".

Senior Turnbull government members and Labor have poured cold water on calls for a "citizenship audit" of all MPs.
