Zama, Japan: Japanese police have found nine mutilated bodies hidden in containers with their heads cut off and flesh stripped in a suburban Tokyo flat, media reported on Tuesday.

Police found the bodies, some covered with cat litter, while searching for the 23-year-old woman who had disappeared after exchanging Twitter messages, allegedly with Shiraishi.

Police arrested 27-year-old Takahiro Shiraishi the same day on suspicion of body disposal.

According to Jiji Press (wire service in japan), police found the two heads inside a cool box at the entrance of the apartment before being shocked about the rest of the bodies.

Local media reports confirmed that Shiraishi had told police that he chopped up the bodies in a bathroom.

The police are expected to file murder charges later.

Police are now investigating to determine whether Shiraishi, who was arrested on suspicion of body disposal, killed the woman and the other eight victims.

The report said the woman had contacted the man via social media.

The case captured attention in a country known for public safety, topping news with reports that showed the building where the suspect lived in a small studio apartment. The brother later learned of the suicide site after logging in using her name and password, leading to the discovery that she had been in touch with the suspect.

"I thought it smelled like sewage", the neighbor said. He added: "It was something I never smelled before".

The two were recorded by security cameras walking together outside railway stations near her residence and the suspect's apartment on October 23, the reports said.
