If you haven't gotten your flu shot yet, you should.

Seasonal influenza vaccine is created to protect against the three or four influenza viruses that research indicates are most likely to spread and cause illness among people during the upcoming flu season.

Both the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Dubois County Health Department recommend getting a flu vaccine annually.

In addition, Melnick said, it can take up to two weeks for immunization protection to kick in.

Because flu viruses are constantly changing, the vaccine composition is reviewed each year and is updated as needed based on which influenza viruses are making people sick, the news release states.

"Anyone can get the flu; however, some people are more susceptible to having very severe complications from the flu", said Tulsa Health Department spokesperson Leanne Stephens.

Garvey says Iowa's flu season generally hits its peak during the months of January and February. If you live with or care for an infant younger than 6 months of age, you should get a flu vaccine to help protect them from flu. In Dubois County, the health department has administered roughly 1,400 flu vaccines, which Oeding says is on par with recent years. That includes fever, chills, body aches, coughing, and a runny nose.

Influenza is highly contagious, and can lead to serious complications and hospitalizations for people who are most vulnerable, Jalbert said.
