People who want to get rid of unwanted prescription drugs can find nearby collection sites by visiting www.DEATakeBack.com or by calling 800-882-9539.

There will also be a collection site in the parking lot next to Kaiser Permanente at 3501 Stockdale Highway.

Held on October 28 from 10 a.m.to 2 p.m., the national program will include Andover, Georgetown, Groveland, Methuen, Atkinson and Plaistow police departments.

The national, twice-yearly event has been organized by the Drug Enforcement Administration with local law agencies for the past seven years.

The study shows that a majority of abused prescription drugs were obtained from family and friends, often from the home medicine cabinet. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the US are alarmingly high, as are accidental poisonings and overdoses.
