Singapore to halt car population growth from next year

Singapore to limit number of cars on its roads from 2018

From February 2015 to January 2018, the growth rate is set at 0.25% per annum.

From the inception of the certificate of entitlement quota system in 1990 until 2009, Singapore restricted auto growth to 3.0 per cent annually.

The number available depends on the number of vehicles that are deregistered.

The current growth rate of the vehicle number set by LTA is 0·25% per year, at which level it will remain until the end of January. From that point on, the small country has gradually reduced yearly growth to 0.25 per cent.

For context, Singapore has a population of around 5.6 million crammed into 719.1 square kilometres of land.

The website for Singapore's Land Transport Authority lays out the government's reasoning: roadways account for 12 percent of the city's land mass, leaving little room to expand the road network.

The new freeze on vehicle numbers won't apply to trucks and buses for the time being.

President Trump celebrates Diwali by lighting 'diya' in Oval Office
Trump said Indian-American neighbours and friends have made incredible contributions to the country - and to the world. Speaking to us about the ceremony, Principal Deputy Press Secretary Raj Shah said, "This is a tremendous event".

Almost 12 percent of land area in Singapore, one of the world's most expensive places to own a vehicle, is taken up by roads and officials want to ensure the most productive use of the remaining space.

She wasn't kidding. To mitigate this, LTA also announced that the government would be investing a whopping $28 billion in public transport over the next five years. In theory, one autonomous auto can replace up to 10 privately owned vehicles, which sit idle more than 90% of the time during the work day.

Singapore, whose population of 5.56 million has grown almost 40% since 2000, tightly controls the ownership and sale of vehicles through a bidding process and an annual growth rate that caps the total number of vehicles on the city-state's roads.

The total number of vehicles peaked at 974,170 in 2013 and declined to 956,430 in 2016.

Currently, the government only allows the number of private cars on the road to increase just 0.25% per year.

A report by Deutsche Bank found that a new midsize auto will cost around $90,000 in Singapore. These cars seem not to be included in Singapore's growth target for private vehicles. The growth of Uber and Grab seem to be a major factor behind this rise. Valid for 10 years, the average cost of the certificate is Sg$50,000, making Singapore one of the most expensive countries to buy a vehicle. A auto in Singapore can cost four times as much as in the U.S.
