New charge for polluting vehicles to tackle London's 'lethal air'

Motorists with pre-2006 diesel or petrol vehicles will be forced to pay £10 a day to drive in London

The new "T-charge" applies to both diesel and gasoline vehicles that do not meet the Euro 4 emission standards outlined by the European Commission.

Pre-Euro 4 vehicles are typically those registered before 2006 that are approximately over 12 years old, but TfL advise anyone who has a auto registered before 2008 to check if their vehicle is eligible for the charge. That charge is in effect in the same zones at the same time as the T Charge, though it applies to almost all vehicles and costs £11.50 pounds per day ($15).

London's new Toxicity Charge (T-Charge) is already making a difference to air quality on the streets of the capital.

"When the Mayor's own assessments prove it won't work, the T-charge becomes nothing more than an attack on London's poorest drivers and small businesses".

More than 150,000 diesel vehicle drivers face paying up to £24 a day for even the shortest journeys under plans by the mayor of London to tackle air pollution.

"Small businesses which will be affected are likely to be hit hard by the introduction of the T-charge, which nearly doubles the cost of driving a vehicle through London during peak hours".

United should have had a third when Nordfeldt could only palm down McTominay's header and Tuanzebe blazed over from close range. In the 96th minute, the England youth global headed home from a corner to put Arsenal ahead for the first time in the tie.

The Mayor of London Sadiq Khan launched the T-Charge to tackle London's air-pollution and prepare Londoners for the early introduction of the Ultra-Low Emission Zone, which he is proposing to introduce as early as April 2019.

The plans have come under criticism from conservative members of the London assembly and the federation of small businesses.

But responding to claims that the charge would have no impact, Khan told Radio 4′s Today programme this morning: "I'm hoping that after a few weeks and months, we will see a drop in the number of people driving the most-polluting vehicles into Central London".

Eventually, the Mayor aims to create an Ultra Low Emissions Zone stretching from the North Circular in north London to the South Circular south of the river by 2021.

"That means fewer adults suffering from asthma, strokes and dementia, but also children hopefully not having the under-developed lungs they now do". Since 1st January 2017 these polluting vehicles have made around 2.6 million trips within the zone, contributing to London's toxic air.

However, she said it was "only one step towards clean air". Black cab drivers are eligible for financial assistance to switch to less polluting vehicles.
