Additionally, the smoke of firecrackers during Diwali as well as the local pollution such as vehicular traffic and construction dust particles too added to the already deteriorating air quality.

Kolkata reported "moderate" levels of PM 10 during the same time, with an overall air quality index better than that of Delhi or Mumbai. Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) indicated that the pollution index in the RK Puram area of Delhi reached to 776 microns at 6 am, which was 13 times the normal figure. The pollutants had violated the corresponding 24-hour safe limits of 60 and 100 respectively by up to 10 times. Skymet Weather has already predicted about the more-worsening pollution levels post the festival.

The AQI in Chennai on Wednesday, the day the city celebrated Deepavali, was "poor", with an index value of 263, which rose to "very poor" (302) at 4 pm on Thursday - AQI in New Delhi was almost the same at 319, according to the Central Pollution Control Board.

Particulate Matter (PM) is one of the prime indicators which is used to monitor pollution level. CPCB's monitoring station at Alandur touched a high of 837.78 μg/m3 between 9 and 9.59 pm, while Manali in north Chennai, an industrial area, recorded a maximum PM 2.5 level of 999.99 μg/m3 for two hours between 12 am and 1.59 am on Thursday. Therefore, the pollution level will remain high.

U.S. consulate, which records PM2.5 count across the globe, found sudden spike in pollution after a long period of satisfactory ambient air quality. The Hindustan Times report also quoted PPCB experts who warned, "The AQI on Diwali night is likely to reach the "severe" level of 500, which has the potential to cause respiratory problems even among otherwise healthy people". It was Delhi's worst Diwali in three years in terms of air quality as a deadly cocktail of harmful pollutants and gases engulfed the city in thick smog. However, PM 10 levels were less than the PM 2.5 levels this Diwali.

As many as 2.51 million people in the country have died prematurely that year due to diseases linked to air, water and other forms of pollution.
