Dutch DPA says Microsoft breaches data protection laws with Windows 10

Microsoft Launcher for Android is now rolling out to all users

If you are a Windows 10 user, then you may be knowing that Microsoft Edge browser is there in the Windows PC for a while and a large number of a majority is already used to it.

The DPA issued a lengthy release about the matter, in which it is explained that there are almost 4 million active Windows 10 devices with Windows 10 Home and Pro in the Netherlands.

According to the agency, the USA firm offers two tiers of telemetry - basic and full. "It turns out that Microsoft's operating system follows about every step you take on your computer". That results in an intrusive profile of yourself. They are not informed which data are being used for what goal, neither that based on these data, personalized advertisements and recommendations can be presented, if those users have not opted out from these default settings on installation or afterward. Not to be outdone in the ongoing browser war, Microsoft is bringing its Edge browser to Android OS. If this is not the case, the Dutch DPA can decide to impose a sanction on Microsoft. DPA Vice-Chairman Wilbert Tomesen expresses that it is hard for users to know the extent of personal data being shared creating "an intrusive profile" of individuals using the operating system. Thus, the brunt of the work in protecting against such attacks would fall on the browser's ability to block, for example, phishing URLs when a user is trying to open them. The first is to help Microsoft fix Windows for devices on which it experiences errors, and the second is for Microsoft to serve personalized ads to Windows 10 users.

Rukmini Callimachi, a correspondent for the New York Times, also said two senior USA officials denied that Jones was dead. There have been several such claims of IS militants having been killed only for them to resurface months later.

As operating systems and browsers become more and more secure malicious actors are finding it increasingly more worthwhile targeting the unchanging weak link in the chain, the user, using techniques such as phishing and spear phishing to trick users into willingly giving up their important data and credentials. Microsoft says Edge will also sync a user's favourites and reading lists across devices. Microsoft Edge will pull up the reading and information right onto your screen.

Replying to the concerns raised by the Dutch agency, Microsoft said it is working to comply with the Dutch data protection law. However, the company made a similar promise previous year to avoid being fined by the French DPA, too, so it remains to be seen if the changes Microsoft plans to make in a future Windows 10 update will indeed follow all of the law's requirements.
