How Senator Corker's Remarks May Backfire

The feud that erupted between President Trump and Senator Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) has confused numerous political veterans in Washington. Bob Corker and is now suggesting that the Tennessee Republican's conversation with The New York Times was recorded without his awareness.

He could have been referring to any of a few dozen mercurial outbursts, but likely the trigger was a Saturday tweet in which Trump asserted that "only one thing will work" to rein in North Korea - a statement that could only be read as a direct threat to strike Pyongyang militarily.

Corker replied, "It's a shame the White House has become an adult day care center".

"I know they're recording it", Corker said of his aides who were also on the line with him and a Times reporter. If it has any hope of continuing to offer itself as a steady hand on the tiller, more Republicans must follow Corker - rhetorically and, ultimately, electorally. The Tennessee senator had asked the journalist to record their conversation and said that his staff was recording as well.

Trump has responded, mocking Corker's height.

Kenley Jansen earned his second save of the series as the closer appeared in all three games for the Dodgers of the NLDS. Curtis Granderson entered as a pinch-hitter for the Dodgers and went 1-for-2 with a run scored.

Trump said Tuesday that he didn't think his feud with Corker would imperil his tax cut plan.

Corker is a member of Trump's party and as chairman of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee, he's a leading voice on foreign policy issues. Corker also helped tutor Trump on foreign affairs, and he in turn considered the senator as a possible running mate and secretary of state.

Trump was in Huntsville late last month on behalf of U.S. Sen. When Corker later called Trump to tell him that he had chose to retire - a decision Corker made on his 65th birthday, August 24 - the president expressed disappointment, the congressional official said.

Trump later gave Corker grief about the comment during a meeting in the Oval Office, according to a Republican congressional official who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the private conversations.
