Tropical Storm Ophelia to become HURRICANE on path to UK: 'Wet and windy' weather forecast

Forecasters say Ophelia has become the 10th hurricane of the 2017 Atlantic season, churning far out at sea and posing no immediate threat to land.

"These conditions favour strengthening and the NHC forecast again calls for Ophelia to become a hurricane in about 36 hours". The U.S. National Hurricane Center says Ophelia is expected to become a hurricane by Wednesday.

Ophelia, located almost 800 miles southwest of the Azores, has maximum sustained winds of 65 mph and was moving southeast at 6 mph, the hurricane center said.

Ophelia was no threat to the US but could move near the Azores by the weekend. Ophelia will then run into an approaching deep-layer trough that will make the hurricane accelerate toward the northeast. Through today, October 11, we've had 15 named storms - 10 of which have been hurricanes, and 5 of those 10 became major hurricanes (Category 3 or higher).

There was heightened activity in the Colombian box, with Ninthoinganba Meetei initiating surging runs down the right flank. It was a very different India that turned up after the 0 -3 loss to U.S. three nights ago.

The other disclaimer about tropical cyclones before satellites were routinely used to examine the entire tropical Atlantic Basin in 1966 is that some tropical storms - even hurricanes - may have been missed that could have influenced any streaks, especially in the 19th century.

Ophelia is forecast to track northeast through Monday.

After it has hit Portugal, the remnants of Ophelia could bring strong winds to the UK.

More information about the hurricane can be found online. The official forecast for Ophelia calls for the hurricane to peak at 85 miles per hour Thursday and Friday.
