"We love being at the forefront of Apple's investment in scripted programming, and can't think of a better property than Spielberg's beloved Amazing Stories franchise", said NBC Entertainment president Jennifer Salke.

The consumer electronics giant has signed a deal with Spielberg's Amblin Television and Comcast 's ( CMCSA ) NBCUniversal television production unit to make new episodes of "Amazing Stories." a science-fiction and horror anthology series that ran on NBC in the 1980s, the Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday. In fact, they're so common that even a reboot of an oddball cult-classic barely turns heads (Twin Peaks shows that formula can succeed, right?).

Amazing Stories was an anthology series that told tales of the incredible, odd and/or supernatural variety.

We've reached out to Apple for comment on the report.

Recent hires Jamie Ehrlicht and Zack Van Amburg from Sony Television appear to be hard at work on landing a serious TV series for Apple.

Whether or not these new players will attract an audience will likely depend on content, not distribution mechanism. But the Journal quotes an executive as saying each episode of the new Amazing Stories will have a budget of more than $5 million dollars. Until now Apple's original video content - like the Carpool Karaoke spin-off - has been made available exclusively to Apple Music subscribers. Initially set up at NBC in 2015, the reboot comes from writer Bryan Fuller (American Gods), who is executive-producing along with Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey from Spielberg's Amblin TV.
