"The United States has made a decision to formally revoke a number of economically focused sanctions on Sudan", a senior official told reporters in Washington on Friday night.

"We have received praise from both the European Union (EU) and the United Nations (UN) for our efforts in this regard", Ahmed Abu Zeid told ANA.

The U.S. intends to continue to improve bilateral relations with Sudan.

Omar al-Bashir, who took power in a military coup in 1989, faces genocide charges at the worldwide criminal court relating to extensive human rights abuses perpetrated by Sudanese forces against civilians in Darfur, the western region gripped by bloodshed since 2003, when rebels took up arms against the government, accusing it of discrimination and neglect. Sudan was the only country to be removed from the new list, which also added restrictions on several additional countries. "Furthermore, the United States is prepared to use additional tools to apply pressure if the Government of Sudan regresses on progress to date in the five areas noted above or takes negative actions on other areas of concern". Now slain Al-Qaeda founder Osama bin Laden lived in Sudan between 1992 to 1996. The sanctions had cut Sudan off from much of the global financial community.

According to a second administration official, who also briefed reporters on the policy change, Sudan has pledged not to pursue arms deals with Pyongyang going forward.

Employee Dies In Japan Due To Heavy Overtime
The official added that it was necessary to study how elections are covered because of the threat overwork poses to media workers. A Japanese journalist worked herself to death by doing 159 hours of overtime in a month and taking just two days off.

And Sudan is still on the U.S. list of state sponsors of terrorism, along with Syria and Iran which the Department of State alleges to have "repeatedly provided support for acts of worldwide terrorism".

On Friday, the U.S. Administration permanently lifted 20-year-old economic sanctions against Sudan citing positive actions on humanitarian access and counter-terrorism. There was no immediate comment from the State Department.

Shortly before leaving office, Obama temporarily eased penalties against the country. According to the United Nations, since 2003 when ethnic groups rebelled against the government at least 300,000 people have been killed and over 2.5 million have been displaced.

In its annual human rights reports, the US State Department has also continued to assert that Sudan's "authoritarian" government flouts the rule of law, attacks civilians in Darfur and other conflict zones, and lets its security forces commit abuses with impunity.

Sudan was one of seven countries on US President Donald Trump's travel ban, first issued in January.
