More than 20 dead, hundreds injured in Las Vegas shooting

The shooting was reportedly carried out on October 1 by 64-year-old retiree Stephen Paddock, who opened fire on a large outdoor country music festival from the 32nd floor of a nearby hotel.

As authorities began investigating the mass shooting in Las Vegas Sunday night, Marilou Danley quickly became someone they wanted to talk to.

NBC News reported that Paddock wired $100,000 to the Philippines last week, but NPR has not independently verified that report.

As police scramble to identify a motive for the attack on a music concert at the Mandalay Bay Hotel that killed at least 59 people and injured 527, officers focused on financial transactions carried out by the 64-year-old retired accountant. Investigators found a computer and 23 guns in Paddock's hotel room.

Authorities also found thousands of rounds of ammunition in Paddock's Mesquite home, and an ingredient used in explosives was discovered inside the killer's vehicle.

Marilou Danley issued the statement after returning from her native Philippines and being questioned for much of the day by Federal Bureau of Investigation agents.

The search for Danley initially spanned several countries, with conflicting reports she could have been in Japan or the Philippines at the time of the shooting.

FBI agents investigating the Las Vegas mass shooting met Ms Danley when she arrived back in America on Wednesday afternoon (AEST).

The guard was "very heroic" and provided police with information about the shooter's location, McMahill said.

Immigration documents in the Philippines say that Danley first arrived there on September 15, departed on September 22 then returned three days later on a flight from Hong Kong.

In formal remarks as the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, Trump said he was honored to be "in the company of heroes".

Paddock reportedly reserved a room at the Mandalay Bay hotel using some of her documents.

"It's a pity, though, because he's the only one really who can answer this", she said.

Meanwhile, the number of wounded in the Sunday night massacre has been lowered from more than 500 to 489. "She was away so that she will not be there to interfere with what he's planning", the sister said.

"He was so rude to her in front of us", Esperanza Mendoza, the store's supervisor, told the newspaper.

"This investigation is not ended with the demise of Mr. Paddock", the sheriff said.

Before the Las Vegas attack, a man named Stephen Paddock booked rooms in a Chicago hotel that overlooked the site of the August Lollapalooza music festival, a spokeswoman for Chicago's Blackstone Hotel said in an e-mail.

The woman said Danley was "a good person" who would've stopped Paddock had she been in a position to do so.

President Donald Trump is set to visit Las Vegas in the aftermath of the deadliest mass shooting in modern USA history.

Marilou Danley, Paddock's girlfriend, issued a statement Wednesday afternoon through her attorney, Matt Lombard. The FBI runs their name through the National Instant Criminal Background Check System, which refers to three databases of offenders. If a person's record is clean - and Paddock evidently did not raise any red flags - he can buy as many guns as he wants.
