Despite the good news, Tesla failed to meet its production expectations for the Model 3. In total, we expect to deliver about 100,000 Model S and X vehicles in 2017, which would be a 31% increase over 2016.

Tesla's October 2 investor letter blamed Model 3 delays on "production bottlenecks" from manufacturing subsystems taking longer to activate than expected.

Despite the hiccups though, the company emphasized there are no fundamental issues with the Tesla Model 3 production or supply chain.

Overall production and delivery figures for Tesla were rosier, and showed how its flagship Model S continues to account for its biggest chunk of sales.

In the third quarter of 2017, Tesla said on Tuesday, the automaker delivered 26,150 vehicles.

Tesla's mixed results were announced hours after a senior General Motors executive revealed that the US giant had laid out plans to go "all electric". What is less clear is whether it will be able to break those bottlenecks soon enough to hit Musk's ambitious production goals for 2018. First, the company delivered more vehicles than it produced for the first time in nearly two years.

Q3 production totaled 25,336 vehicles, with 260 of them being Model 3. The Palo Alto, California-based company delivered just 220 Model 3 sedans in the third quarter.

A Tesla representative in the United Kingdom confirmed to Energy-Storage.News a report carried on the weekend by Japanese newspaper Nikkei, which said the EV and stationary energy storage maker, parent company to solar installer SolarCity, is instead using battery cells made by South Korean supplier Samsung SDI.

Tesla had previously said it wanted to produce 1,500 Model 3s in September alone and 20,000 a month by the end of the year.

It appears the company couldn't escape the manufacturing complexity entirely. The numbers reduced Tesla's second quarter loss by almost $165 million.

However, many market analysts have started talking about Tesla losing ground to Chevrolet Bolt EV. "The location appears to be the Inyokern Airport that's located approximately 150 miles (240 kilometers) north of Tesla's Design Center, where the company will be holding the official Tesla Semi unveiling event".
