Bale had missed Real Madrid's win over Espanyol on the weekend through calf soreness, but initially it was thought that he would be okay for worldwide duty.

The Dragons have won only eight of the 33 games Bale has missed since making his debut in 2006, while Wales have won none of the last 10 when the 28-year-old forward has been absent.

However, Bale has withdrawn from Wales' contest against Georgia in Tbilisi scheduled for Friday, October 7, and the game against Ireland in Cardiff on October 10.

Gareth Bale has been ruled out of Wales' World Cup Qualifiers against Georgia and the Republic of Ireland through injury.

Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane had informed last week that Bale was suffering from "muscle fatigue", and it was "nothing important".

After a sensational season in which he netted winners in the Copa del Rey and Champions League final victories, he began missing more and more games. At present, they are behind Serbia by four points and have just a one-point lead over Republic of Ireland.

"I've seen a lot of Ben in this campaign and he reminds me of what Gareth Bale was like when he was younger", Edwards told BBC Sport Wales.

For Wales boss Chris Coleman the news represents a huge blow, as the national team still face a major fight to keep their hopes of qualifying for the 2018 World Cup alive.

Wales need to win both games to at least make next month's World Cup play-offs, but their record without Bale does not make pretty reading.

His absence could mean a first worldwide start for Woodburn, whose goal off the bench against Austria in September catapulted him onto the big stage.
