Federal officials said the operation, which resulted in the arrest of 498 people from 42 countries, focused on cities and regions where ICE deportation officers are denied access to jails and prisons to interview suspected immigration violators or in places where detainers are not honored.

The operation targeted people with prior criminal convictions, pending criminal charges and gang ties and those who re-entered the country after they were deported, ICE officials said.

As a result, ICE dedicated more resources to "these communities" for the arrests, he wrote.

Immigrants who are covered by the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program were not targeted, according to ICE.

Westword recently obtained documents via a Freedom of Information Act request that showed ICE is also conducting regular arrests of undocumented persons attending Denver courthouses for cases unrelated to immigration.

The agency, known as ICE, announced Thursday that more than 450 people had been arrested around the country this week, including 28 in Maryland and 14 in Washington, D.C.

Philadelphia saw the largest number of arrests, 107.

Though ICE did not detail the cases of all those arrested, it said that one of the arrests in Denver was of a lawful permanent USA resident from Guatemala who'd been convicted of menacing, several DUIs, child abuse and domestic violence.

Among those apprehended in the raids, 317 are convicted criminals, 68 are fugitives, 104 have been deported previously and 18 are in, or are affiliated with, a gang, according to the release.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) specifically targeted "sanctuary cities" this week.

One of President Trump's first moves in office was to defund "sanctuary cities" such as Los Angeles, New York and Chicago.

Talia Inlender, a senior staff attorney at Public Counsel, which advocates for immigrants, told the Times she believed the enforcement was politically motivated. They also were held in jurisdictions where ICE detainers are not being honored.

"ICE's goal is to build cooperative, respectful relationships with our law enforcement partners to help prevent unsafe criminal aliens from being released back onto the streets", Homan said. But the Orange County Sheriff's Department has a close relationship with ICE, including a contract that allows deputies to act as immigration agents to interrogate inmates about their legal status.

In Baltimore, a citizen of El Salvador who entered the USA illegally on a fraudulent passport, and was previously charged with attempted murder/conspiracy to commit murder and convicted of first degree assault.
