Abdul Qayoom Najar killed by security forces in Uri

Top Hizbul Mujahideen terrorist Abdul Qayoom Najar was killed in a gunbattle with security forces near the Line of Control (LoC) in Uri sector in Baramulla as he was trying to sneak into the valley to take charge of the outfit, a senior police officer said.

A year before the killing of Hizbul Mujahadeen commander Burhan Wani blew a storm in Kashmir, Qayoom Najar, one of the most experienced militants operating in the Valley, had rattled the security agencies. He entered the limelight after he allegedly formed his own Lashkar-e-Islam which carried out series of attacks on mobile towers and killed several former terrorists and Hurriyat activists for their alleged links with security forces in Sopore and its adjacent villages. After the killing of top HM commanders this year in Kashmir, Salahuddin directed Najar to return to Kashmir and take the reins of Hizbul. "Hizbul Mujahideen has nearly been wiped out from north Kashmir".

Defence Ministry sources said the Army also foiled an attack by the Pakistani Border Action Team (BAT) in Kupwara in the afternoon.

The longest-surviving militant commander, who once led a major revolt against the Pakistan-based militant leadership and founded a radical group Lashkar-e-Islam, was killed on Tuesday while he was infiltrating back into Kashmir valley, police said.

The reforms from 2009 to 2013 allowed women to work without seeking any male's permission and made domestic abuse an offence. Praise for the move has been pouring in from inside the Saudi kingdom , as well as around the world.

Posters like these started appearing in Sopore town in 2015, after the attacks on the telecom operators. Sources said that all army camps around the area have been put on high alert. He used to change his appearances to escape security agencies.

A resident of Mumkak Sopore, police says Najar was sixteen when he became a militant after the killing of Hizb commander Abdul Majid Dar. He was arrested in 1992 but later released.

"He was now tasked with reviving the outfit in Kashmir in the wake of elimination of top militants", he said. Qayoom had also holed up in Jammu in September 2015 before his escape to PoK. So, had this gentleman made entry into north Kashmir, it would have been a problem for us. He had reportedly married to the sister of a slain militant before he went over to Pakistan in 2015.
