The Mayor of London has accused Uber of bringing "unfair pressure" onto Transport for London (TfL) following the body's decision to ban the ride-hailing company from the capital.

Transport for London said the decision was based on the way drivers' background checks were completed, how criminal offences were reported and the use of software created to stop regulators accessing its app.

He referred to a case where an Uber driver was allowed to continue working despite an allegation of sexual assault, leading to another more serious attack on a woman in his vehicle.

However London mayor Sadiq Khan has asked Transport for London (TfL) officials to "make themselves available" to meet the boss of Uber, after he apologised for issues they have faced.

Transport for London's decision to cancel Uber's private hire licence has angered numerous 3.5 million Londoners who have come to rely on the cheaper alternatives to black cabs. They will continue to take passengers until an appeals process is exhausted, which is likely to take several months.

But it is also true that we have sometimes done things or way around, "Khosrowshahi said, adding:" I pledge to work with London to put things right and allow city to move safely.

A spokesman for Uber said around 20,000 Uber drivers had emailed the city's mayor directly to object to the decision.

Uber is expected to officially lodge its appeal within the coming days, while more than 700,000 people have signed an online petition calling for the TfL licence to be granted.

In the wake of London's bombshell decision last week to deny Uber's licence renewal, the embattled company's new CEO has struck a conciliatory tone.

"No company can behave like it's above the law, and that includes Uber", said Maria Ludkin, Legal Director of GMB, the U.K.'s drivers union.

He said the company had operated in London for five-and-a-half years, during which it was audited by TfL. Chief Executive Logan Green told the Associated Press in August that Lyft planned to go global "in the not too distant future".

On Friday, London Transport Authority (TfL) made a decision to withdraw giant's license from private chauffeur-driven cars in British capital.

"Until Uber gets this message then it will suffer lost trade as a result of its deteriorating reputation". Uber said it will appeal, during which time it can continue operating.

Transport for London released the public statement on Friday 22 September stating it has informed the London based company branch, "it will not be issued with a private hire operator licence after expiry of its current licence". According to BuzzFeed, 40,000 people drive for Uber in London and 3.5 million residents use the ride-sharing platform.

TfL explained that Uber is "not fit and proper" to hold a licence.
