Tehran: On the other hand, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif described US President Donald Trump's speech at the UN General Assembly as "ignorant, empty and populist", after the latter criticised Tehran and called the nuclear deal with it as "an embarrassment".

"We can not abide by an agreement if it provides cover for the eventual construction of a nuclear program", Trump said, warning other world leaders, "I don't think you've heard the last of it".

Long term, Netanyahu and Israel may not be as enthused by Trump's dream of a world in which nations make a priority of "sovereign" interests - or as the president put it, repeating a campaign phrase that unsettled many U.S. Jews, "America First".

"Thank you, President Trump and thank you, Ambassador Nikki Haley", he said, referring to the USA envoy to the UN, who has been a staunch supporter of Israel at the United Nations.

"It's extremely worrying", Russia's foreign minister Sergei Lavrov told Reporters at the United Nations on Trump questioning the Iran nuclear deal.

Netanyahu and Trump are united in their skepticism and vocal criticism of the accord, despite support for the deal among their close colleagues and advisors.

On Wednesday, Trump told reporters that he had reached a decision, but did not elaborate.

The nuclear deal, Rouhani said, is evidence that Iran is committed to engaging with that global community. Join us in a conversation about world events, the newsgathering process or whatever aspect of the news universe you find interesting or important.

The leaders gathered at the JCPOA meeting had an "open and candid exchange", Tillerson said.

Supporters of the pact say it's time to push harder toward eliminating atomic weapons than nations have done through the almost 50-year-old Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

Previously, Rouhani asserted that if Washington slaps Iran with new nuclear-related sanctions, Tehran will be ready to scrap the deal within "not a week or a month but within hours" and return to its nuclear program.

He also warned that North Korea developed nuclear weapons despite assurances that negotiations would prevent them from doing so, and that in the case of Iran "unfortunately, if nothing changes, this deal will turn out exactly the same way".

"The world will have lost a great opportunity, but such unfortunate behaviour will never impede Iran's course of progress and advancement, " Rouhani said.

He also said it was "an outrage" that some nations continue to trade with North Korea.

The president says its honor to welcome the body of world leaders to his home town, and takes time to express appreciation for every lader who has offered assistance and aid to those suffering in the wake of Hurricane Harvey and Irma.

"So we're working very hard on it".

Trump's emphasis on Syria - the thrust of much of his speech - was the routing of the Islamist terrorist threat embodied there by the Islamic State.

But Mr Tillerson said the talks were "very matter of fact", and acknowledged Iran was complying with the deal.

But Trump told the United Nations the deal was being used as a cover for the pursuit of a nuclear warhead anyway, and Haley has charged that Iran has been caught in "multiple violations".

Trump told reporters this week he had made a decision on what to do about the agreement, approved by his predecessor Barack Obama along with leaders of Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany, but would not say what he had decided.

Until the matter was resolved the U.S. would fulfil its commitments, he said.
