Iranian president rips into Trump as a 'rogue newcomer' to world politics

"And I think that's the president's assessment of the Iranian nuclear agreement, is that it's not a stiff enough agreement, it doesn't slow their program enough and holding them accountable is hard under the agreement". "I am always excited to speak on your behalf to the nations of the world here at the UN".

"If you simply condemn and threaten, then we're going to antagonise countries over whom we want to exert influence", said Lavrov, referring to Trump's comments.

"On the one hand Iran is trying to demonstrate they are the pragmatic rational actor here and maintain unity among the other signatories of the nuclear agreement, even if from the USA side it starts to unravel", Vakil told CNN.

But when he addressed the United Nations Tuesday, President Trump blasted the deal.

The previous U.S. administration agreed the deal pertained only to the nuclear issue, and hailed the pact as victory for Barack Obama's non-proliferation agenda.

Iran also has said it has no intention ever of acquiring nuclear weapons, but the U.S. and Israel are among the countries that do not accept those assurances, citing Iran's past nuclear activities.

"The US president´s remarks are not a source of pride for the American nation and the elite of that country should feel ashamed of... having such a president", Khamenei said.

It was the first time that the two men, U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, had met since Trump took office on January 20. He called it an "embarrassment to the United States". We will strengthen our missile capabilities.

"I wish to underscore here that the defense capabilities of the Islamic Republic of Iran, including our missiles, are exclusively defensive deterrents for the maintenance of regional peace and stability and the prevention of adventurist tendencies of irrational aspirants", he said. So you know, we were asking the president Hassan Rouhani about this, and he said, look; these are things that were negotiated over a long period of time.

As he spoke, dozens of other nations began signing the first treaty to ban nuclear weapons, a pact spurned by nuclear powers.

"France will try to convince President Trump of the pertinence of this choice (keeping the accord), even if work can be done to complement the accord after 2025", he said. It was a very, very matter-of-fact exchange of how we see this agreement very, very differently.

Washington has been particularly concerned about Iran's heavy intervention in Syria on the side of the government of President Bashar al-Assad and its support for Shiite rebels in Yemen who control the capital in defiance of its Saudi-backed government.

Trump returned to the theme in his address.

"We can not let a murderous regime continue these destabilizing activities while building unsafe missiles, and we can not abide by an agreement if it provides cover for the eventual construction of a nuclear program", he said.

"The United States is ready, willing and able".

Mr Rouhan condemned Mr Trump's combative speech as "ignorant, absurd and hateful rhetoric" and said Iran would not be intimidated by threats as he promised to stick with the nuclear accord. "We have largely in recent years vacated very important competitive space with Iran in this sophisticated campaign of subversion where they're really creating nearly a Hezbollah model across the greater Middle East". He said Trump is seeking "an excuse" to pull out of the nuclear deal and it would be a "waste of time" for him to meet the president. "The deal is the outcome of two years of intensive multilateral negotiations overwhelmingly applauded by the global community and endorsed by the Security Council", Rouhani said.

"As such, it belongs to the worldwide community in its entirety and not only to one or two countries".

"We have opened our doors to engagement and cooperation", Rouhani said.
