After years in limbo on Manus Island and Nauru, refugees will soon know whether they will be moving to the United States to start a new life.

Turnbull said he did not know how many more refugees the United States will take.

"People are a bit surprised, some people had given up hope that it would happen", Refugee Action Coalition spokesman Ian Rintoul told AAP.

According to a report of the Australian Department of Immigration and Border Protection published in June, there were 1,174 asylum seekers detained on the islands, many of them for periods of over two years and the majority having refugee status.

Australia will not settle any refugees who try to arrive by boat - a policy that the government says dissuades asylum seekers from attempting the unsafe and occasionally deadly ocean crossing from Indonesia.

Australian prime minister Malcolm Turnbull confirmed on Wednesday that 25 refugees from Nauru and 25 from Manus Island, held as part of Australia's offshore detention regime, would be resettled in the United States.

Papua New Guinea's Supreme Court ruled previous year that the detention center on Manus was unconstitutional, because it violated the detainees' constitutional right of personal liberty.

In his first call with Turnbull after entering the White House in January, Trump railed against the refugee deal, calling it a "stupid deal" that would make him look "terrible".

Police interfered to decide on Burnley vs Leeds penalty shootout
However, they still have a number of good players, including a pair of Algeria internationals in Riyad Mahrez and Islam Slimani. Leeds eventually knocked Burnley out of the competition on penalties after the game finished 2-2.

Almost 2,000 men, women and children are held on Manus island and Nauru, the majority of whom have been awarded refugee status by the two tiny Pacific countries.

A member of a human rights groups holds a placard as they call for an independent inquiry in Sydney on August 9, 2017, after another refugee was found dead at a detention camp on Manus Island. "It seems there had been some discriminatory selection".

Australia would need to make alternative arrangements should the bulk of the 800 men still be there by that deadline. I guarantee you they are bad.

"Right now they're experiencing anxiety and anticipation".

Under the terms of that arrangement, the U.S.is free to reject any refugees who fail to meet their vetting standards.

A PNG court ruled a year ago that holding people on Manus was unconstitutional, and Canberra is set to shut the camp in October, but it remains unclear what will happen to those not taken by the United States.

But the United Nations certainly supports resettlement of the refugees - its refugee agency, the UNHCR, is helping Australian authorities with the process.

Iran is one of the countries affected by President Trump so-called Muslim ban, blocking access to the U.S.to people from Syria, Sudan, Somalia, Libya, Iran and Yemen (Iraq was originally included but later taken off the list).
