AMD is making a self-driving AI processor for Tesla

Electric carmaker Tesla Inc is working with AMD to develop its own artificial intelligence chip for self-driving cars, CNBC reported on Wednesday, citing a source familiar with the matter.

CNBC, quoting sources, claimed that the progress toward building a custom Tesla AI chip had reached the auto maker, which has received back "samples of the first implementation of its processor" and is now running tests on it.

GlobalFoundries, which fabricates chips for Advanced Micro Devices Inc, said on Thursday that Tesla had not committed to working with it on any autonomous driving technology or product, contradicting an earlier media report.

Tesla aims to deliver fully-autonomous driving capabilities in 2019.

Tesla, AMD, and GlobalFoundries did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Understandably AMD shares have risen significantly in afterhours trading.

And so those that were very angry but aren't fascists, I now urge them to turn their backs (on the FN) and come and join us". "I have no taste for doing nothing, so of course I am leaving the Front National ".

The effort to build its own chip is in line with Tesla's push to be vertically integrated and decrease reliance on other companies. He was replaced by former AMD executive Jim Keller, who also worked at Apple and was the lead designer behind the company's A4 and A5 chips, amongst others.

Mobileye chose not to renew its contract with Tesla last July, just a few months after Model S owner Joshua Brown died in a fatal accident while Autopilot was activated. Tesla has brought in several AMD veterans after Keller was hired.

Tesla has previously relied on chips developed and manufactured by Nvidia Corp., a company better known for its graphics chips and cards that has progressively moved toward applying the technology to artificial intelligence and self-driving cars.

Notably Tesla is not working with Intel, which has enjoyed a long working relationship with Alphabet's Waymo vehicle group.
