Threatening action or rhetoric can not help resolve the situation, the ministry said, after US Defense Secretary Jim Mattis hinted about the existence of military options.

US President Donald Trump's renewed threat to "totally destroy North Korea" during comments before the UN General Assembly in NY this week only bolsters Pyongyang's internal propaganda that the US wants to kill North Koreans - and thus the contention that the nation must build a powerful nuclear arsenal to thwart a pending US strike.

He said he wanted North Korea, which never reached a formal peace treaty with the South after the 1950-53 Korean War - to attend next year's Winter Olympics to be hosted by South Korea. The plan calls for North Korea to stop its missile and nuclear tests and for the US and South Korea to end their joint military exercises in turn.

He did not provide details, but he responded affirmatively when asked if these included options that would not put Seoul at grave risk.

Since Kim Jong Un took power in North Korea in late 2011, his nation has tested weapons at a torrid pace.

He did confirm that he had discussed the option of putting tactical nuclear weapons in South Korea, an idea rejected by South Korea's President last week. However, they still have a number of good players, including a pair of Algeria internationals in Riyad Mahrez and Islam Slimani. Leeds eventually knocked Burnley out of the competition on penalties after the game finished 2-2.

Onodera has said a new security law passed in 2015 might allow it to shoot down a Guam-bound missile if it poses a critical security threat to Japan and its top ally, the United States.

In addition, Aegis ships from the United States, Japan and South Korea are expected to take part in an exercise scheduled from the end of September through the beginning of October to detect and track ballistic missiles.

Mr Trump and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping discussed "North Korea's continued defiance of the global community and its efforts to destabilize Northeast Asia" by phone, the White House said. However, the USA rejected the plan and continues to conduct drills with South Korea.

That same day the US and South Korea flew eight fighter jets and two bombers over the Korean peninsula as a show of force, according to a South Korean defense ministry statement.
