Navy to Use Xbox Controllers on Submarine Periscopes

The periscope sights were originally controlled by operating Lockheed Martin-made sticks that resemble those found on helicopters, but the mechanisms aren't popular among the junior officers and sailors who operate them.

As a result, Lockheed Martin experimented with other systems like multi-touch tables and Kinect, but the $30 Xbox Controller was the victor amongst sailors and the government.

Gamers have debated for years over which controller designs may have been the best for playing games, but for the US Navy's purposes, it has decided that the Xbox 360 controller is what it wants to use. "And one of the things that came out is the controls for the scope".

Rohingya refugees illegal, pose security threat, Centre tells SC
The matter is being heard by a bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra with other two judges being Justices A.M. An estimated 40,000 Rohingyas are present across India including Jammu and Kashmir and Rajasthan states.

Awash in the pale glow of numerous cutting-edge tactical displays, the next generation of our Navy will control the periscopes of our most advanced underwater warships with a controller you can get for $30 at your local gaming store. Plus, the joystick was heavy and clunky, and it takes hours to train a sailor to use it. Basically, the current joystick system (valued at $38,000) which are used to control the periscopes, photonic masts, and 360-degree cameras on board the submarine is not working out well for some crew members.

The humble Xbox 360 controller will now help control a multi-million $ killing machine. The Navy plans on implementing the new Xbox 360 hardware on future Virginia-class submarines. And sailors don't look through the glass one at a time. As well as that it also allows submarines to travel faster and quieter than before and saves on building costs.

The USS Colorado, which is expected to be commissioned in December, will be the first vessel to be equipped with the Xbox controllers.
