As Trump heads to UN, advisors say North Korea hasn't fully felt sanctions yet

The United States has not ruled out military options against North Korea, President Donald Trump's national security adviser said Friday, after Pyongyang launched another missile over Japan.

The United Nations reacted strongly after North Korea tested a weapon analysts say has the explosive power of 250 kilotons of TNT, passing the new sanctions on September 11.

North Korea launched what appeared to be an intermediate-range ballistic missile over northern Japan early Friday (local time), defying global calls to halt its provocations.

The Security Council passed its most stringent package of sanctions against North Korea yet on Monday, in response to claims by the nuclear power that it had tested a hydrogen bomb.

Haley repeatedly said the latest package of North Korea sanctions unanimously passed by the Security Council is significant, calling it a "massive sanctions package".

McMaster stressed Friday that the U.S.is still trying to resolve the conflict diplomaticcaly.

But he said that while the USA did have a "military option", it was not the preferred route, adding that the U.S. is keen to work with allies on measures "short of war".

"I have no problem with kicking it to General Mattis because I think he has plenty of options", Haley said. "We will defend our people, our nations and our civilization from all who dare to threaten our way of life", Trump told military personnel at Joint Base Andrews, marking the 70th anniversary of the Air Force. "Now it is not what we would prefer to do", McMaster said.

The launch is the second to flyover Japan in less than a month, and the first since North Korea's sixth nuclear test and new United Nations sanctions on the country.

The last set of sanctions included restrictions on North Korea's oil imports and a ban on its textile exports.

"What we are seeing is they continue to be provocative, they continue to be reckless".
