Six dead in Florida rest home as Irma death toll rises

Police opened a criminal investigation on Wednesday but have not yet determined a cause of death for the six residents.

"Dr. Jack Michel in 2006 settled claims after he and five others were accused of agreeing to send patients to his Miami hospital, Larkin Community, for unnecessary treatment, according to the Department of Justice". Broward County said the home alerted officials about the situation on Tuesday, but when asked if it had any medical needs or emergencies, it did not request help. Miami's Mike Carvelli, whose mother is at the facility, said his brother was there earlier this week and found it "a little warm, but not uncomfortable" and there were portable air conditioning units in use. The Florida Health Care Association, an industry group for long-term care, released a statement emphasizing the strain Hurricane Irma has put on nursing homes and care centers.

"We often see that injuries and deaths after disaster in the United States are more common than those actually caused by the disaster itself", Kirsch said.

"It's a lot of trees and power lines and snapped poles", said Kate Albers, a spokeswoman for Collier County, which stretches across southwestern Florida and includes Marco Island, where Irma made her second landfall.

The Daytona Beach Fire Department said Wednesday morning that one person was dead and three others taken to a hospital for carbon monoxide poisoning from a generator inside a home there, and the department pleaded with people to keep their generators outside. "I have nothing", said Mercedes Lopez, 50, whose family fled north from the Keys town of Marathon on Friday and rode out the storm at an Orlando hotel, only to learn their home was destroyed, along with the gasoline station where Lopez worked. Hollywood police Chief Tom Sanchez said that call came in at either 4 a.m. or 6:25 a.m., but the hospital started moving patients at 7:15 a.m.

Retired nurse Flora Mitchell's 58-year-old sister Vanda Wilson has been as resident at Rehabilitation Center since suffering a stroke, which left her unable to speak or move, a decade ago.

At the same time, the spacecraft will reconfigure its systems to allow real-time data transmission back to Earth. Atmospheric models suggest that the spacecraft's last signal will be received back on Earth at 7:55:06 a.m.

The entire facility -which has two wings- was evacuated.

The rehab center's administrator, Jorge Carballo, said the home "is cooperating fully with relevant authorities to investigate the circumstances that led to this unfortunate and tragic outcome".

Rehabilitation Center officials couldn't immediately be reached for comment.

The home said in a statement that the hurricane had knocked out a transformer that powered the AC.

"Approximately 150 facilities out of the almost 700 (nursing) facilities in the state do not now have full power services restored", the statement said. Under a previous owner, the place was found to have committed Medicare fraud.

An AHCA inspection of the rehab center dated March 31 faulted the center for several violations, including poor food and unsanitary conditions.
