Chrome will make autoplay videos less annoying in 2018

Chrome Auto Play update

Chrome Auto Play update

"This will allow autoplay to occur when users want media to play, and respect users' wishes when they don't", Google said in a statement.

As outlined on the Chromium Blog, Chrome 64 will tweak Google's autoplay rules and restrict autoplay videos unless they play without sound or users have expressed an interest in that website's content in the past. It will also offer more control to users and unify web behavior across various platforms.

In the interim Chrome 63 will add an option allowing folks to disable audio from autoplaying videos on individual websites.

According to Google's release schedule for Chrome, the new Chrome 64 build is slated to be released to the public in January.

There's nothing more annoying on the web than autoplaying vids with sound to your unsuspecting ears and colleagues while you simply browse for a pair of sneakers instead of actually working.

"These changes will give users greater control over media playing in their browser, while making it easier for publishers to implement autoplay where it benefits the user".

In addition to the rules Google has about muted videos and the considerations it makes concerning previous media engagement, Google will also allow autoplay video through on sites users have added to their homepages.

Google now offers an autoplay block in Chrome for Android, which attempts to stop autoplay videos from eating up data and battery life. The same features will be in canary and dev as well, and these browsers will send telemetry back to Google about how people use the muting feature. The site muting option will persist between browsing sessions, allowing for some degree of user customisation. Google keeps updating the Google Chrome browser from time to time.

The group that decides this is known as the Coalition for Better Ads, which includes Google, Facebook, News Corp, and The Washington Post. A later update will further expand Chrome's anti-autoplay features by automatically blocking autoplay videos unless they meet certain conditions.

So, what does Google define as showing interest?
