After tearing through the Caribbean, Irma, the formerly powerful Category 5 hurricane, is now losing strength.

No storm deaths have been reported in North Carolina, and and no serious injuries had been reported early Tuesday.

FEMA Chief Brock Long said he believed the Keys and Collier County in southwest Florida took the brunt of the storm.

As Irma transitioned from a hurricane to a tropical storm, the cleanup effort across Florida begins, as residents try to pick up the pieces of what Irma left behind.

Hurricane Irma first made landfall in the Florida Keys on Sunday morning, then made landfall in the state again Sunday afternoon when it hit Marco Island.

In Florida and southern Georgia, more than 8 million people face hurricane-force winds topping 74 miles per hour, said Ryan Maue of WeatherBell Analytics. Florida's Governor Rick Scott said Sunday, "We have never had anything like this before".

Almost seven million people in the south-east were warned to get out of harm's way, including 6.4 million in Florida alone.

Irma hit them as a Category 4 hurricane, with sustained winds near 130 miles per hour.

Late Sunday, as the storm moved up Florida's west coast, officials said 28,000 people had taken refuge in 45 county shelters in Hillsborough County, which includes Tampa.

Shares of USA and European insurers jumped on Monday, with companies particularly exposed to Florida posting sharp gains, as the losses from powerful storm Irma were seen as being less severe than feared. As the sun rose in Orlando, many tried to survey the damage, but authorities warned that conditions remain unsafe and asked people not to venture outside because of a curfew.

The storm has been blamed for more than 40 deaths, including six in Florida, three in Georgia and one in SC.
