Life-threatening wind, rain and a storm surge are expected in the Turks and Caicos Islands, another British territory, into Saturday, after it was "pummelled" by Irma on Thursday night.

At the 5 p.m. advisory, the National Hurricane Center extended its hurricane warning northward for the east coast of Florida to Sebastian Island and to Anna Maria Island on the west coast. A day later, it had weakened to a tropical storm, but still brought unsafe storm surge flooding to Jacksonville. It caused $15 billion in damage and was blamed for as many as 35 deaths in the U.S.

Irma is now losing strength, the NHC says. About 5,000 of the Keys' 30,000 permanent residents stayed to ride out the storm, Florida Keys spokesman Andy Newman said. "It's frightful, what we saw". But more inland communities could see heavy winds and rain along with an elevated risk of tornadoes. Crews worked to clear the single highway that connects the island chain with the mainland, inspecting dozens of bridges. "It's the road. It's being able to get supplies down", Newman said. The hurricane is expected to hit the state by Sunday morning.

"Irma went over and we were all like, 'Oh good, we survived.' And then all of a sudden some of the panels came off the roof, I guess, and we started getting water pouring down in different places", said 61-year-old Mary Fitzgerald.

More than 3.4 million homes in the state are without power, and parts of the city of Miami are under water. Streets flooded, and flying objects such as coconuts turned into risky projectiles.

At least two cranes used to construct high-rise buildings in Miami collapsed.

Clearing roads: Roads are the main concern, Miami Mayor Tomas Regalado said, as thousands of trees are down.

"It's so dark in here", he said.

Singer Tori Kelly also made an appearance during the telethon from LA, where she was featured as one of the night's performers. Everyone just kept answering phones and answering phones and answering phones. "We're compassionate.

Irma made landfall Sunday morning at 9:10 a.m.at Cudjoe Key in the lower Florida Keys, the storm made another landfall in Marcos Island, Florida mid-Sunday afternoon.

Almost all tropical cyclones that hit the United States produce at least one tornado, "provided enough of the. cyclone's circulation moves over land", the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said. About 2,000 customers there are still without power. "It's going to be a massive cleanup", he said.

"It's enormously important that every American in the path of this storm take the warnings of state and local officials to heart", Pence said. And it could be a week until it's restored, Barnett said. Irma, which hit just days after the Houston area was deluged by unprecedented flooding in Texas from Hurricane Harvey, was expected to cause billions of dollars in damage to the third-most-populous US state.

Homes destroyed: About a dozen homes were hit by trees and destroyed in Hillsborough County, where Tampa is located, according to an initial assessment by county officials.

"I just hope everyone survived", Gov. Rick Scott said.

The flooding in Jacksonville was expected, at least to a point. The St. Johns River rose to record levels, flooding major roadways.

"Take action now to protect your life", the National Weather Service in Key West advised.

"Well", he added, "we're about to get punched in the face".
