Sun fires off 3 huge flares, including strongest in a decade

X-class represents the most intense solar flares, with an X2 being twice as intense as an X1.

The aurora was due to hit early this morning, but measuring instruments showed it failed to arrive on time. The biggest solar flare of all time was a humungous X28 back in 2003, which luckily was at an oblique angle to Earth, so we managed to avoid the full brunt. NASA say the second flare was the largest flare in the current 11-year solar cycle, during which the sun's activity waxes and wanes.

The path of the solar flare's CME is now being modelled to see whether some of the material could impact our atmosphere. The United States Space Agency's Solar Dynamics Observatory detected these facts and also captured images.

The flares were blasted at 5:10 a.m. EDT (0910 GMT), and at 8:02 a.m. EDT (1202 GMT). Both were considered X-class - the strongest type of solar flare - with one of them proving to be the most powerful since 2005. They will also give solar astronomers more data and information to help them better understand the star that provides heat and energy to life on Earth.

Solar flares are bright flashes of radiation that come from magnetically active regions on the surface of the sun.

The Solar storm could damage the radio communications and plane flights according to Tamitha Skov, who supervises space weather.

Meanwhile, Police have pinned their hopes on the CCTV footage to get some clues about the identity of the killers. Gadkari went on to defend Prime Minister Narendra Modi against criticism on his silence over the killing.

Wednesday's flares were ranked using the X-class system, which is used to measure the intensity of particularly strong flares.

If Earth is in the CME's path, the particles interact with our magnetic field.

The strong geomagnetic storm warning issued by NASA is, as of September 7, still in effect and will continue to be over the next few days.

The radio blackout from these particular flares have already passed but in the coming days, people living in high latitude-regions might be able to see auroras or northern lights in the sky over the course of this week.

While a CME did erupt in the wake of these two solar flares, NASA is still trying to analyze whether or not Earth is in its path.
