Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Myanmar's State Counsellor Suu Kyi discussed the security situation prevailing along the long land border and maritime boundary.

Prior to their departure, Indian officials made it clear that Modi is expected to raise the exodus of the ethnic Rohingyas into neighbouring countries.

"We (India and Myanmar) can together do a survey for an INA memorial here", he stated to much applause from the gathering.

He also spoke about an India free from poverty, terrorism, corruption, communalism, casteism that is being created.

"We've now committed to building a hospital in Nay Pyi Taw (Myanmar), that is a new commitment that has come out of this visit".

Modi's visit to Myanmar comes amid a spike in ethnic violence concerning Rohingya Muslims in the Rakhine state.

"In the Kaladan (multimodal transport) project, work on the Sittwe port and the Paletwa Inland Waterways Terminal has been completed", he said, adding that work on the road component of the project has also started. "They also kept in touch with their roots".

Ms Suu Kyi, in her remarks, thanked India for taking a strong stand on the terror threat that Myanmar faced recently.

In terms of capacity building, New Delhi is assisting the eastern neighbour in setting up institutions of higher learning like the Myanmar Institute of Information Technology, Advanced Centre for Agricultural Research and Education, Myanmar-India Entrepreneurship Development Centre, Myanmar-India Centre for English Language Training and India-Myanmar Industrial Training Centres.

"People of India have the confidence that India can be transformed and we can break free from some of the evils that entered our system", he said.

India and Myanmar were also looking at strengthening existing cooperation in areas of security and counter- terrorism, trade and investment, infrastructure and energy, and culture, Modi had said ahead of his visit.

Suu Kyi said, "We are implementing recommendations given by former United Nations secretary-general Kofi Annan as quickly as possible to create harmony and peace in the Rakhine state".

He appreciated India's Act East Policy and Neighbourhood First Policy, saying that these policies have helped tighten the friendship and expand the dialogue partnership between India and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). When I am travelling, I make it a point to interact with the Indian diaspora, PM Modi said adding that the Indian diaspora has contributed to the development of wherever they have settled.

In Bagan city, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be visiting the 1105 AD Ananda Temple which is another prominent Buddhist shrine in Myanmar.

The Prime Minister is on the second leg of his two-nation trip during which he travelled to southeastern Chinese city Xiamen where he attended the annual BRICS summit and held talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Russian President Vladimir Putin and other world leaders.
