Maximum sustained winds are near 45 miles per hour (75 kph) with higher gusts.

The National Hurricane Center said hurricane hunters found Katia was much more organized with a partial eyewall.

"The system will likely end up moving inland over the northern coast of southeastern Mexico sometime late this week or this weekend", AccuWeather Hurricane Expert Dan Kottlowski said.

Katia is the 11th named storm this season in the Atlantic. Katia is expected to produce total rain accumulations of 5 to 10 inches over northern Veracruz, and 2 to 5 inches over far southern Tamaulipas, northeast Puebla, and southern Veracruz through Saturday morning.
