Federer was trying to keep alive his hopes of the long-awaited first match-up at the US Open with Nadal when he brought an 11-0 record against No 33 seed Philipp Kohlschreiber into their night match-up.

Qualifier Kaia Kanepi reached her first Grand Slam quarterfinal in over four years besting Russian 20-year-old Daria Kasatkina 6-4, 6-4. Who will win the US Open titles this year?

Vandeweghe, who had never reached the second week at her home Grand Slam tournament before this year, was involved in a real battle against Safarova, who certainly had opportunities herself to get herself in contention for the victory, though the American proved too strong as she sealed a 6-4, 7-6 (2) victory in an hour and 39 minutes on Arthur Ashe Stadium.

The top seed, who needs to win her quarterfinal against either Lucie Safarova or CoCo Vandeweghe to have a chance of retaining her No.1 ranking, was ruthless in speeding through a second set bagel, breaking Brady three times - the final time denying the American from two game points down to seal a dominant display.

"I didn't change anything". "I felt like even when I was warming up, the ball was coming off clean". So there is nothing really that I did different. "They definitely helped me pull through in that third set". "Like not even personally", said Pliskova, a victor in 46 minutes over unseeded Jennifer Brady.

"It's my fourth match on this court and I enjoyed playing here as always".

The straight-set victory was a welcome reprieve for Pliskova after being pushed to three sets in her previous two matches and fighting off a match point in one of those - a 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 victory over No. 27 Zhang Shuai.

By the time the pair shook hands, Pliskova had thumped 23 winners, won 92 per cent of points on her first serve and made just nine unforced errors.

Pliskova admitted she has been struggling with the pressure of having the number one next to her name but she got off to a good start here and played freely. I didn't play my best. So I think sometimes I think I play good shots, good rallies, and then there is hundreds of mistakes and not a good shot. But, you know, I think she served well.

"It means the world to me to make the quarterfinals", Keys said.

Former champion Juan Martin del Potro, the No 24 seed, faced sixth-seeded Dominic Thiem, with the victor getting Federer if the five-time champion can improve his 31-1 record in night matches at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Keys showed incredible form against the fourth seeded Ukrainian, Svitolina, in her last round and will be a tough opponent if she can reproduce this performance.
