Data On 'Millions' Of Time Warner Cable Customers Leaked

Around 4 million Time Warner personal records exposed in data leak

A new leak affecting millions of Time Warner Cable customers, including over 600GB of private information and sensitive data, was sitting on a completely unsecured Amazon server, and it was put there by the company that's supposed to be in charge of keeping it safe.

The breach was discovered by a third party firm that was working to resolve a data breach at another company.

The researchers found two Amazon S3 buckets linked to BroadSoft, a global communications company that partners with service providers, including AT&T and TWC.

"We see more and more examples of how bad actors use leaked or hacked data for a range of crimes or other unethical purposes", Bob Diachenko, Kromtech's chief communications officer said.

The data dated as far back as November 2010.

The exposed repository also contained a trove of internal company records including SQL database dumps, internal emails, codes with access credentials, access logs and more.

AAA says the temporary shutdown of some refineries along the Gulf Coast will delay that decline, but prices will eventually come. Marshall Doney, President and CEO of AAA said: 'The storm has had a devastating effect on the lives of so many.

The security researchers were investigating a different data breach incident at World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE).

The S3 buckets were accidentally configured to allow public access, potentially allowing anyone with the URL to access and download the sensitive data.

The data included usernames, email addresses, MAC addresses, device serial numbers and financial transaction information, although it doesn't appear that social security numbers or credit card information was involved.

TWC, which was acquired by Charter Communications previous year and is now called Spectrum, said the data related to users of the MyTWC mobile application used to remotely manage accounts, which was developed by BroadSoft.

Charter clarified that once the unlocked server was discovered, Broadsoft immediately removed the information and began a joint investigation into the incident.

According to Time Warner Cable parent Charter Communications, "There is some nonfinancial information of TWC customers, especially for those who used the MyTWC app, which may be visible to external individuals". The data was left exposed by Broadsoft, a company that has numerous large ISPs as clients. To be on the safe side, though, Charter is recommending that MyTWC owners change their user names and passwords. One of the repositories was secured nearly immediately following the email warning, despite claims by an India-based BroadSoft engineer (in an email response to Kromtech) that the repository had nothing to do with the cloud-based unified comms specialist.
