The New Statesman's Anna Leszkiewicz used terms like "stilted" and "self-conscious", insisting, "Every single change to the show has been for the worse".

Last night's opening episode averaged around 6.5 million viewers.

But the broadcaster's average of 6.5m viewers, with a peak of 7.7m, fell below 10.5m reported by the BBC at the same point previous year.

C4 nabbed rights to the ratings smasher a year ago after the BBC lost the contract to air it following disagreements over price with Love Productions, the United Kingdom firm behind the baking format.

The BBC's overnight ratings do not account for those watching on catch-up services.

However, the show picked up extra 732,000 viewers, on average, on the Channel 4 +1 channel, peaking at 878,000.

The figures don't include those who watch the show on the network's catch-up service All 4.

So I think sometimes I think I play good shots, good rallies, and then there is hundreds of mistakes and not a good shot. But, you know, I think she served well. "It means the world to me to make the quarterfinals", Keys said.

GBBO returned to screens on Tuesday night- with the new presenting team Noel Fielding, Sandi Toksvig and Prue Leith, who replaced the much-loved Mel and Sue, debuting the show on Channel 4, previously on BBC One.

However, the figure which includes the Channel 4 "plus one" audience, still represents a drop of nearly four million compared to the opening episode from the previous series on BBC1.

They were the best since 7.6m watched the opening of the London Paralympic Games on the channel in August 2012.

The company also has an exclusive first negotiation position with Love Productions for the global distribution of future seasons of The Great British Bake Off.

The broadcaster paid £75m for the show in a three-year deal.

Great British Bake Off 2017 fans were excited to see the show, as the series launched on Channel 4 for the first time. Channel 4 had been hoping to get between six and seven million tuning in after paying £75m to snatch it from the Beeb.
