North Korea's sixth nuclear detonation was officially confirmed by the Blue House during a press conference held by Chung Eui-yong, top national security advisor to President Moon.

US President Donald Trump agreed with South Korean President Moon Jae-in to revise a joint treaty capping the development of the South's ballistic missiles, Moon's office said on Saturday, amid a standoff over North Korea's missile and nuclear tests.

"The worldwide community must treat this new provocation with the utmost firmness, in order to bring North Korea to come back unconditionally to the path of dialogue and to proceed to the complete, verifiable and irreversible dismantling of its nuclear and ballistic programme", he said in a statement.

South Korea earlier raised its military alert level, placing all troops on high alert. The two agreed that the USA and South Korean presidents would talk on the phone soon to discuss cooperation on measures against North Korean provocation, he said.

North Korea claimed it carried out a test of a hydrogen bomb on Sunday that can be loaded into its intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), sparking yet more geopolitical tension in Northeast Asia. H-bombs are also harder to develop. It said it would fully enforce United Nations resolutions on the country.

Previous U.N. penalties have resulted in Pyongyang expressing its displeasure and demonstration of its iron-clad nuclear ambition through more missile tests.
