Florida State QB Deondre Francois out for the season

FSU played straight up with Alabama until special teams of last few years showed up.

The Florida State Seminoles' disastrous opener against the Alabama Crimson Tide on Saturday night might end up being a lot worse than the final score.

He goes from zero to 60 in about a half a second. Miscues on special teams by the Seminoles and two second-half interceptions of quarterback Deondre Francois, however, helped the Tide turn quickly.

After an Alabama three-and-out, Florida State took over from its own 30-yard line with 55 seconds remaining in the second quarter. Despite starting at the Alabama 31-yard line, the Seminoles were not able to capitalize. "We have a tremendous amount of respect for Florida State's program". Rashaan Evans then deflected a ball on second down before Levi Wallace blanketed Keith Gavin for a 1-yard loss on third down to force a punt. The fourth quarter is shaping up to be a good one.

Late in the fourth quarter, Seminoles quarterback Deondre Francois was sacked from behind by Tide linebacker Ronnie Harrison.

That's 14 potential points exclusively off special teams.

After moving the ball into scoring territory on its first drive, Alabama's offense sputtered setting up a field goal attempt from walk-on kicker Andy Pappanastos.

The win means the Super Eagles top Group B on nine points while Cameroon have just two after three matches. It's only by the ending minutes of the first half that the tables turned.

The difference in the game is right there.

However, from there, the non-kicking portion of Alabama's special teams unit would pick up its specialist.

When Tide running backs Bo Scarbrough and Damien Harris tried to run up the middle, there was practically nowhere for them to go. The play set up a 25-yard field goal from Pappanastos to put Alabama up 13-7 with 1:54 left in the third quarter.

Facing third-and-10, Alabama's next drive was kept alive when Hurts found Ridley for 21 yards to move the UA offense to the Florida State 41-yard line. The Tide ran for 173 yards and a touchdown on 42 carries by comparison. A two-point conversion from quarterback Jalen Hurts to Calvin Ridley gave Alabama a commanding 21-7 lead with 1:41 left in the third quarter.

The sophomore was injured during the Seminoles' season-opening 24-7 loss to Alabama on Saturday. When not collapsing runs from the inside, the 6-foot-2, 309-pound Payne was hustling to the perimeter and downfield, making tackles in pursuit. Two plays later, Hurts took off for a 20-yard gain to the FSU 18. Freshman James Blackman replaced Francois and appears to be that starter going forward. The next two games should allow Hurts to develop more as a passer.

Alabama has a new home away from home. After that, the Tide will host Colorado State on September 16. The Seminoles, meanwhile, will host Louisiana-Monroe hoping that their young quarterback will be available.

Coming back as Alabama's leading receiver, Ridley was once again Hurts' favorite option. He also moved to fifth all-time in career receiving touchdowns after catching a 53-yard score in the first half.
