Apple asks FCC for 'strong, enforceable open internet protections'

Apple is, at the very least, in good company, as a staggering 98.5% of all comments to the FCC were in favour of maintaining the United States' current strong net neutrality rules.

Republican lawmakers had hoped to bring top executives from tech companies and internet providers to testify publicly in a bid to garner support for a deal to set permanent rules on the future of internet access after a more than decade-long fight.

Advocating open internet, the letter said there should be scope for competition.

After a long silence, Apple defended net neutrality in a letter to the FCC Thursday.

It will be hard to figure out exactly how many comments were filed by the deadline since the FCC is at the same time posting comments that have come in in the two days since the deadline. The group also adds that the unique comments were the ones that individuals took time to write and are in favor of Title II net neutrality rules.

Apple, on the other hand, specifically urged Pai not to roll back an existing ban against so-called "fast lanes", which might allow broadband providers someday to charge for faster delivery of tech companies' movies, music or other content.

Living and working in London, the threat is always with us. 'I did archery as a kid and that was not a normal archery arrow. A cricket match in the United Kingdom has been suspended after an "arrow or crossbow bolt" apparently landed on the field.

Supporters claim the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) push to eliminate or weaken the rules would support renewed investment in America's internet networks, while critics argue the move would empower big business and stifle consumer choice. The letter said that "Apple remains open to alternative sources of legal authority, but only if they provide for strong, enforceable, and legally sustainable protections, like those in place today".

It also touched on one other topic that's relevant to the FCC, but often not part of the net neutrality conversation.

"Broadband providers should not block, throttle, or otherwise discriminate against lawful websites and services, " Apple said in its comments.

There are 21.9 million fillings on the FCC's "Restoring Internet Freedom" docket already, blowing away the four million received before the 2015 decision that imposed net neutrality rules.

That really dives into one of the main problems with Pai's suggestion for how to make the open internet work.
