Afghanistan routinely accuses Pakistan of harbouring Taliban insurgents, while Islamabad says its enemies have found sanctuaries in Afghanistan.

Pakistan has denied that it harbors terrorists and has said the United States is using Islamabad as a "scapegoat" for its own failure to win the 16-year war in Afghanistan.

His remarks remarks came after the State Department notified to the Congress to place a pause button on $255 million foreign military financing for Pakistan.

The recent Afghan policy announced by Trump has also worsened the diplomatic ties between America and Pakistan because of Donald Trump's address where he blamed Pakistan for harboring terrorists.

U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said at the time that the administration was considering curtailing aid, severing Pakistan's status as a major non- North Atlantic Treaty Organisation ally, and even hitting Islamabad for the first time with sanctions, unless it tackles anti-Afghan militant groups within its borders.

The United States has provided Pakistan more than $33 billion in aid since 2002. However, sources said, Islamabad will be a part of the process once the Afghan government assures and takes action against elements directly or indirectly involved in waging terror in Pakistan.

"Pakistan has much to gain from partnering with our efforts in the region".

Successive U.S. administrations have struggled with how to deal with nuclear-armed Pakistan.

Like most Muslim countries, Afghanistan is celebrating Eid on Friday, while in Pakistan it is being celebrated on Saturday.

The $255 million in military assistance was the largest portion of an estimated $1.1 billion of US aid Congress had authorised in 2016.
