The People's Republic of North Korea (DPRK) has announced that it now has a miniaturized hydrogen bomb and is able to mount the deadly weapon on it's newly-built intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), according to a Sunday announcement by Pyongyang state media.

The agency added that leader Kim Jong Un had inspected the loading of the hydrogen bomb onto a new ICBM.

The North's official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said the new bomb was made entirely within the country.

It described the weapon as "a multi-functional thermonuclear nuke with great destructive power which can be detonated even at high altitudes".

For years now, the North has been relentlessly pursuing a program to develop a nuclear weapon small enough to be mounted on an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM).

The report carried pictures of the leader inspecting the device with sections.

Aside from the factuality of the North's claim, the language in its statement seems a strong signal that Pyongyang will soon conduct another nuclear weapon test, which is crucial if North Korean scientists are to fulfill the national goal of an arsenal of viable nuclear ICBMs that can reach the US mainland.

Another observer expressed doubt as to whether North Korea is as close to finalizing a working design for a thermonuclear warhead as it says it is.

On Tuesday, Pyongyang launched an intermediate-range missile, identified by the North Koreans as the Hwasong-12, over Japan.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump warned again that "all options are on the table" concerning North Korea's nuclear and missile program.

The latest claim from the secretive state comes just days after it launched a ballistic missile over Japan and sparking global condemnation.

Sunday's KCNA report on the new nuclear capability follows a week of escalating tensions on the Korean Peninsula.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in offered talks to Kim in July, but North Korea hasn't responded.

It came as US and South Korean forces were nearing the end of the 10-day annual Ulchi Freedom Guardian joint exercises, which the North regards as a rehearsal for invasion. There's speculation that such a test could come on or around the September 9 anniversary of North Korea's national founding, something it did a year ago. With each launch, experts say Pyongyang can further refine and ideal its missile technology.
