Brush fire in Sun Valley closes 210 freeway with flames and high winds

La Tuna Fire, named after the canyon area where it erupted on Friday, has led authorities to evacuate more than 700 homes in a north Los Angeles neighborhood and in nearby Burbank and Glendale, officials said.

The city of Los Angeles went on a modified tactical alert Saturday afternoon, a move that allows police to be assigned to the fire as needed, according to LAPD Capt. Dave Storaker.

The fire was reported before 1:30 p.m. on the south side of the 210 in the 10800 block of La Tuna Canyon Road on the west side of the mountains, Stewart said.

Firefighters, backed by five engines, were trying to save the single home that had so far been caught by the flames in Sunland-Tijunga area, fire officials said.

A strike team comprised of engines from the La Mesa, Viejas, Lemon Grove, Alpine and San Miguel Fire Departments headed north to assist with the blaze Saturday morning.

Police were forced to shutdown the Freeway as the fire moved onto the road, which remained close over Friday night.

Evacuated streets included: Haven Way from Rolling Ridge Drive to the top of the hill, Olney Place, Ramey Place, Mystic View, Lamer Street from Brace Canyon Road to Keystone Street, Brace Canyon Road above Rolling Ridge Drive, and the community of Castlean Estates and Stough Canyon Nature Center. But the structure-protection efforts were able to hold off the flames for a time and as of 7 a.m. Saturday no homes had yet been damaged, officials said.

"Right now the evacuation orders affect 300 homes in Burbank, more than 250 in Glendale, 180 in the city of Los Angeles", Garcetti said around 10:30 a.m. Saturday.

The fire would be much easier to attack if the weather was not so "unpredictable", Terrazas said.
