Shock as Kenya court cancels election result, demands re-run

"The declaration of Kenyatta's win is invalid, null and void", Judge David Maranga said when announcing the nullification.

President Uhuru Kenyatta said he disagreed with a Supreme Court ruling that nullified his win in last month's presidential election, but that he would respect the decision and urged citizens to do the same.

"When there is a movement in the market beyond a certain limit, we have to stop trading to allow the market to process the information", Odundo said. And again, I say peace.

"They can not. Kenyans will decide, and that is the nature of democracy".

He said his IEBC will make make internal changes to staff ahead of the fresh presidential election.

Two judges - Justices Jackton Ojwang' and Lucy Ndung'u - dissented against the majority decision.

One of the most contested aspects of the election was the apparent discrepancy between the electronic results as transmitted and the manual count.

Veteran opposition leader Raila Odinga, 72, for whom the court decision represented a rare victory in his political career, hailed the ruling as historic.

As news of the court's decision spread, cheers and celebrations could be heard in parts of the capital, Nairobi.

Kenya held presidential election on August 8.

Kenya's Supreme Court in a landmark ruling Friday nullified the election that saw incumbent president Uhuru Kenyatta re-elected for another term.

During the hearings, the Supreme Court judges questioned the IEBC lawyers on the differences recorded between the presidential vote and the votes for all the other candidates who participated in the polls.

Local watchdogs Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) and African Center for Open Governance to the Director of Criminal Investigation (AfriCOG) were overseeing the presidential election in Kenya.

The allegations unleashed a deadly wave of protests across the country last month, particularly in opposition strongholds in western Kenya. "Let us go back to the people, and let them decide", Mr Kenyatta said.

The then commission headed by Issack Hassan was accused of bungling the 2013 General Election and corruption, including taking bribes from ballots printer Smith and Ouzman.

Odinga said: "This is a historic day for the people of Kenya and by extension for the people of the continent of Africa".
