The Purchasing Managers' Index compiled by research firm Markit rose to a seasonally adjusted 50.9 in August from 50.0 in July.

"A reading above 50 indicates expansion, while a score below this mark means contraction".

He said: "The UK manufacturing sector continued to show signs of solid progress during the third quarter, with rates of expansion in output, new orders and employment all gathering pace in August". Still, the domestic market was the prime source of new contract wins for the manufacturing sector, despite robust demand from mainland Europe, the US, China and Australia. Japan's Nikkei 225 also posted its first weekly gain in seven weeks, boosted by the August manufacturing PMI, which showed the sector expanding.

Asia's factories cranked up production in August as global demand remained strong, confounding expectations that growth may have peaked, but worries about China's massive debt and monetary tightening in the West are likely to keep businesses and markets on edge for months to come. Efforts to reduce costs led many manufacturers to cut payroll jobs, but the pace of firings was the lowest in three months.

She also raised the prospect of agreeing legal contingents of African migrants who want to study or work in Europe. Merkel also spoke out the same day in an interview with rival German broadcaster ZDF.

The rate of expansion in the United Kingdom manufacturing sector accelerated again in August. "Having endured years of economic malaise, the latest data will be music to the ears of many concerned with Greek manufacturing", said IHS Markit economist Alex Gill. This was highlighted by the sharpest increase in export sales since March 2010.

United Kingdom manufacturing activity surprised to the upside in August as business confidence picked up.

"The manufacturing economy remains in good health despite Brexit uncertainty", said Rob Dobson, director at IHS Markit.

Samuel Tombs, chief United Kingdom economist at Pantheon Macroeconomics, said: "The pick up in the PMI brings tentative hope that the recent decline in the official manufacturing output data will be reversed swiftly". Still, the PMI report showed input costs rising due to higher prices for energy, fuel and metals.
